António (Toze) Ferreira, MÚSICA DE BAIXA FIDELIDADE

Originally released as Ama Romanta No. 13 in 1988, it is hard to not compare "Music De Baxia Fidelidade" to its direct successor: Nuno Canavarro's "Plux Quba."

It is certainly a more prickly album and its sound palette is either bolstered or hindered by Ferreira's academic affiliations with the Royal Conservatory of Sonology, which allowed him access to granular synthesis, vocoding, and "higher-end" electronic music tools. Despite its enharmonic klang and desolate, lost cosmonaut reverb, moments of playfulness and joy frequently come through.

Particularly interesting are the English-language vocal pieces, which, along with moments of "Plux Quba," suggest that Robert Ashley's influence in Portugal was somehow palpable at the time.

"O Verão Nasceu da Paixão de 1921" is stunning, however. Featured on the "Antologia De Música Electrónica Portuguesa" a few years back, its rippling, glissando-lagged oscillators, dense microtonal melodies, and subdued "Automatic Writing" vocal parts comprise something of an unrecognized classic.
