"Schwarzwaldfahrt" features none of the 25-minute angry political free noise that has unfairly been used to characterize Brötzmann for far too long. Here, there are short, often extremely beautiful, experiments with improvising in a natural environment.
More than just birds and airplanes, with each track, you are asked to adjust to a different vista...in some places, the sounds die in the frosty mid-air, in other places they ripple through the forest. Bennink and Brötzmann continuously implement sticks, water, and the resources at-hand to create an extraordinarily diverse palette of sounds.
Their improvisations frequently reach a great degree of comic interplay, but never comes across as trite or obvious. Peter's liner notes give a great context to the proceedings, describing the location in very visceral term, which provides another incentive to support the incredible Atavistic/Unheard Music Series.
